Question by Jarhyn Flyght: Can canine Borreliosis(lime’s disease) vaccine produce immunity in humans?
IE, what is the surface protein that it exploits, are there any known toxic effect to humans in the use of the vaccine, and is it the same or similar to the human version of (LYMErix) the lime’s disease vaccine that was taken off the market due to unsupported claims of autoimmune side effects.

The human Lyme disease vaccine contained the outer membrane protein OspA as a recombinant protein purified from E. coli.

The canine vaccines contain killed Borrelia bacteria. This results in antibodies against many proteins, including OspA and OspC, the current target being investigated for new human vaccines.

Injecting heat killed bacteria into humans is generally frowned upon these days. The risk of complications is higher than most other forms of vaccines. Given that Lyme disease is not that common, the benefit of the vaccine arguable would not outweigh the risk, which is a requirement for any vaccine to be approved.

Realistically, the original human vaccine was poorly made for reasons other than the claimed immune reactions. The mere fact it worked was a borderline miracle. The target was chosen because it was antigenic: using heat killed bacteria grown in vitro to inoculate animals resulted in very strong antibodies against it and these antibodies killed it.
The problem was OspA isn’t even made during the vertebrate stage of the infectious cycle, blood to blood transmission still caused disease in vaccinated animals. Turns out the blood the tick eats contained enough antibodies and complement to kill the bacteria in its gut, preventing infection. Pure luck. OspC based vaccines will not have these problems.
