The emergence of a trH3N2 human contagion was predicted by sequences from 2010 isolates, which were released after WHO issued a pager alert on two cases (in Illinois and Pennsylvania). The pager alert made some concern, especially in eastern Europe, but the CDC noted that although both cases were H3N2 triple reassortants, sequence differences indicated the trH3N2 was not transmitting in humans.

This concern was increased by the recently released sequences from a trH3N2 case in Indiana, A/Indiana/08/2011, which was a trH3N2 closely related with recent trH3N2 human cases, but had bought a pandemic H1N1 M gene. The early MMWR released on Friday described two recent trH3N2 cases, and both had a pandemic H1N1 M gene segment with seven trH3N2 swine gene segments, a constellation not reported previously.

In the spring of 2009 another trH1N1 was isolated from humans. This trH1N1 was distinct from the various trH1N1’s isolated in the United States prior to the 2009 pandemic. Although the originating swine were not identified prior to the start of the pandemic, pandemic H1N1 infections in swine were reported worldwide, as human spread the virus and subsequently infected swine.
