H1N1 vaccine production – Why Has There Been Swine Flu Vaccine Shortage
Why Has There Been Swine Flu Vaccine Shortage
The Federal government was forced to announce shortage with the swine flu vaccine. Only about 28 million doses of H1N1 vaccine would be available by the end of this month, 30% lesser than the 40 million previously predicted. The health departments will have to surely deal with the panicky people who are lining up for the vaccine; and health care workers in their nursing scrubs will be pressed by the desperate public. Who’s to blame for this?
Both the government and the manufacturers counted the chicks even before the eggs were hatched. Predictions were overly optimistic only to be ratcheted down several times. The federal government has predicted for this month 160 million doses on July, when the swine flu virus outbreak occurred only in April.
What caused the shortage of swine flu vaccine supply? There are several reasons. First is that the federal government relied on the assurances of manufacturer. Secondly, the manufacturers didn’t know at first how quick the production would be until a vaccine potency test became available on August. This tells that some of the manufacturers were overconfident about the production. They might have thought that solutions about any problem in the production will just be round the corner. The third reason is undermining the vagaries with the production. And while everyone is optimistic about the production, H1N1 or swine flu did not grow as quick as expected in the eggs used to produce the vaccine.
Most of the projections came from the Biomedical Advanced Research Development Authority or Barda. It’s a part of the Health and Human Services responsible for vaccine contracting during such emergency situations.
Novartis, one of the five manufactures, was hoping to produce 90 million doses by the end of November. But because they were not getting as much as it typically gets for seasonal vaccine, the company is scrambling to end the number of doses by the year’s end. Likewise, Barda predicted 600 million in April, and signed 2.5 million doses of vaccine with the 5 companies based on what they said they could provide.
In the end, the credibility of the government is getting stale. And the citizens are becoming desperate. But there was still a excellent result in rapidly marshalling suppliers, experts say. The first doses were administered quick this month, except in China and Australia. Production was really quicker than getting seasonal flu vaccines.
