H1N1 vaccine for the public
THE Ministry of Health will continue its surveillance of H1N1 in Fiji, says permanent secretary Dr Salanieta Saketa.
Last week, the ministry confirmed 28 cases of H1N1 in the country.
“Initially, we started off with (vaccinating) just the most at risk people who were mainly pregnant women, those with chronic conditions and health care workers or our front line workers,” Dr Saketa said at the conclusion of the H1N1 campaign on October 20. Read more…

Pregnant Women
VANCOUVER — Pregnant women were willing to be vaccinated against the H1N1 pandemic flu if their doctors made an effort to persuade them, a researcher said here.
In a single-institution study of more than 300 women, those whose doctors specifically recommended H1N1 vaccination were nearly seven times more likely to get the shot than those whose providers didn’t mention or didn’t recommend the vaccine, according to Marci Drees, MD, of the Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, Del.
Because of an aggressive pro-vaccine campaign, more than 62% of pregnant women in the hospital were immunized, “significantly higher” than historical rates, Drees told reporters at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Read more…

H1N1 Vaccine
The changes are not significant yet, they said. But there have been some cases of people who were vaccinated also becoming infected, and also some deaths.
“Already this variant virus has been associated with several vaccine breakthroughs in teenagers and adults vaccinated in 2010 with monovalent pandemic influenza vaccine (protecting against only H1N1) as well as a number of fatal cases from whom the variant virus was isolated,” they wrote.

Flu vaccine
Along with fall comes flu season, but having an egg allergy is not a reason to avoid getting the 2010-2011 flu vaccination. According to a new paper published on the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) website, recent studies show that most egg allergic individuals can receive the flu vaccine safely under the care of their allergist/immunologist.
“In the past, persons with egg allergy were told not to get the influenza vaccine because the vaccine contained egg protein and could trigger an allergic reaction. Research in the past year now shows that influenza vaccines contain only tiny amounts of egg protein. Clinical studies proved that the vast majority of persons with egg allergy did not experience a reaction when immunized with the influenza vaccine,” said co-author of the paper James T. Li, MD, PhD, FAAAAI. Read more…

H1N1 Vaccine

Flu Vaccine
Last year, the largest health scare was the H1N1 epidemic, i.e. the Swine Flu. Families were urged to receive the new vaccine that fought against this sickness. And many jumped at the chance, lining up and waiting in long lines to receive the vaccine. But some families chose not to, regarding the vaccine as too new to be sure that there would be no adverse side effects. Read more…

Baby flu shot
What you really want to know BEFORE agreeing to the flu shot (especially babies and pregnant women)
First thing you should know is how the vaccine is bought by your provider, which mfg they are using, and if they use single injections or buy multiple doses of H1N1. In many situations, this alone will tell you if there is Thimerosal (Mercury) in the vaccine, and you can look up the rest of the ingredients yourself – and please do!
Second thing you should know is that the manufacturers (huge pharma) have ‘very clear instructions’ on their insert (that comes with the product) about what medical emergency staff should be on hand when people are given injections of H1N1. Read the pamphlet, question for it.
Third thing you should know is the CDC recently voted to inject 6 month ancient babies and pregnant women, even though there is a significant difference of scientific opinion about who should receive the H1N1 Vaccine. At first it was only those over 18 years of age, yet now, it’s babies 6 mos ancient and pregnant women. Read more…
