H1N1 Vaccine
By Rod Rose/For the Times Sentinel
CNHI
— Flu shots for the 2010-11 season will include a vaccine for pandemic 2009 H1N1 influenza, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.
Each year, flu vaccine is mixed based on a World Health Organization estimate of what flu viruses are most likely to emerge in the upcoming season. This year, health experts anticipate that an H3N2 virus, and a type B virus, are also the most likely to cause the greatest number of flu cases.
The closer the vaccine matches the viruses that emerge, the fewer persons are likely to become sick. Read more…

H1N1 vaccine production

The plant vaccine for the U.S. Army
The method of producing plant-based vaccines (without genetic modification of plants) has several advantages over the traditional use for growing crops vaccines are not hatched eggs.
It is cheaper to quickly and en masse to produce a product and reduce development time from six months to less than a month after the appearance of a new virus strain (the latter succeeded in the past year, the Canadian company Medicago Inc of Quebec, a vaccine candidate against swine influenza H1N1).
Since 2005, the Office of the Defense Advanced Research Projects United States (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, DARPA) has a program of accelerated production of drugs (Accelerated Manufacture of Pharmaceuticals Program). Its goal – to provide the possibility of mass (3,000,000 doses) vaccine production within three months after the discovery of a new virus. Read more…
